SUMMER 2010 NEWSLETTER

This newsletter is dedicated to Zipper, a precious cat whose death
could have been prevented. She came to FALA too late for us
to save her. Zipper died because of cruelty and neglect. In Zipper’s
honor, FALA will be starting a Humane Education Program, so we can
teach children and adults about the importance and joy of
compassion, so we can prevent animals from suffering as she did.

********************************

When we rescue an animal, it stays with us until the right home can be found…no matter how long it takes. Because our commitment to the animals is for life. All of the wonderful animals we have waiting for adoption are spayed/neutered, wormed, inoculated, FELV/FIV tested, treated with Revolution, and micro-chipped. Please visit our website, www.forgottenanimalsofla.org, for more information and to fill out an adoption application. Meet some of our precious rescues…some of them have been adopted, some are waiting for a loving family, all of them were rescued from horrible circumstances, but they will never be afraid or lonely or hungry or sick again.

We’re happy to announce that another one of our long time residents has been adopted. Beth was rescued from a feral colony along Skid Row. She was with us for well over three years. Beth was such a frightened girl when she came to us. By the time of her adoption, she was friendly and outgoing and sweet as sugar. It’s a gradual process to rehabilitate these poor souls after everything they have suffered. Thank you to Carolyn and Arnold for opening up their loving home to Beth.

Lola is another example of one of our rescues from a feral colony. Lola was rescued five years ago along with her sister Fishcake. Fishcake was adopted, while Lola remains with us. Lola has had stomatitis for the past two years. She’s been on medication all that time. The medication stopped working, so recently she had to have full mouth extractions. Lola is feeling much better since she had major surgery. She’s a precious, cheerful girl despite all the hardships she has suffered.

Karnac, a teenager, was rescued from a feral colony in North Hollywood. This older, gentle girl is another example of animals being disposed of, like an old pair of shoes. Karnac not only has a chronic sinus condition, she also has a heart condition. Karnac will need to be under medical care for the remainder of her life. But she will always be loved and cared for, now that FALA is committed to caring for her and protecting her.

For years, FALA has been caring for a feral colony located at a tire shop, next to the former East Valley Animal Shelter. Often cats that were dumped outside the shelter ended up at the tire shop. Without any warning, we were informed that the tire shop lost their lease. The tire shop moved to a temporary location. We managed to continue caring for the cats. One day, we decided it would be in the cats’ best interest to relocate the colony so that they could be in a secure place. We couldn’t take the chance that one day we would be told that we could not enter the tire shop yard.

We ended up trapping the entire gang of cats. Nine of the longtime residents needed dentistry, with lots of extractions. Everyone was tested for felv/fiv (all negative), treated for parasites, bathed, treated with Advantage, and inoculated. We also trapped a few cats from a colony down the street. One cat had a nasty abscess on his neck and we treated him for that. We took care of all the necessary medical treatments, for all these rescued “Poor Souls.”

Everyone was relocated to a FALA Board Member’s property. She has two large, “homey” cat cottages there. Kelly, the fellow with the abscess, recovered and has been adopted to a longtime friend of FALA. His life couldn’t be better! Thank you, Margy, for giving him such a loving home. We’re still rehabilitating everyone else. They’re all so happy to be safe and indoors.

Skylar James is our most recent rescue. Another “throw away,” Skylar appeared at one of our feral colonies two weeks ago. He was four weeks old, skin and bones, and very close to death. His condition has improved dramatically in this short period of time. With this kind of progress, he’ll be available for adoption in a short time. He’s a brave, loving little guy with a big heart and a strong will to live.

Because of the fragile health of so many of the animals we have rescued this year, we have had unusually high medical expenses. Without the wonderful help you give to FALA, these precious creatures would not be safe and happy and healthy. They were living miserable lives that were sure to be short and filled with fear and pain…until you helped us step in and rescue them. Product Donations are also tremendously helpful. Some of the items on our Wish List include: Advantage for fleas; Revolution for ear mites; pet shop gift cards; new or slightly used cat trees/condos; canned cat food; litter.

HOW YOU CAN IMMEDIATELY HELP ANIMALS THAT ARE SUFFERING DURING THESE ESPECIALLY HARD TIMES

PLEASE DONATE: Any amount will help. CHECKS CAN BE MADE PAYABLE TO FALA. We are an all-volunteer organization, so 100% of your donation will immediately go to helping animals. Donations are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law and make a wonderful holiday gift. We have recently established a special SPAY/NEUTER FUND. Two cats and their offspring can produce 400,000 cats over seven years. If you want to make a contribution to this vital effort, please write “Spay/Neuter Fund” on your check and we will immediately use your donation to prevent generations of suffering.

We gratefully welcome donations of FOOD, LITTER, ADVANTAGE (for fleas), CAT BEDS, BLANKETS, etc. We especially need REVOLUTION to treat our animals for ear mites. We would be tremendously grateful for any donations of LUMBER to build a wood floor for our cat enclosures. It would also be wonderful to have CAT CONDOS and CAT FURNITURE donated so we can make our rescued animals more comfortable.

FOSTER HOMES: It’s a simple equation: The more foster homes we have, the more animals we can take in from the streets where they face cruelty, cold, hunger, and death. If you have room in your home and your heart, we are in desperate need of foster homes.

Please go to www.ralphs.com and click on “Community Contribution” to sign up on our behalf for their New Community Contributions Program. Even if you have already registered, they have begun a new phase of the program and you must register again in order for FALA to receive donations from the store whenever you shop at Ralphs. Our NPO Number is 81200.

FALA signed up with PAYPAL: Donors can go to our website and make a donation using their credit card, with no additional expense for them or for us to use this convenient service.

FALA is also working with GOOD SEARCH: By logging on to www.goodsearch.com when you want to do an Internet search and then selecting Forgotten Animals of LA (Toluca Lake, CA) as your designated charity, Good Search will make a donation to FALA when you use them as your search engine.

And FALA is working with SHOP FOR CHARITY DAY. If you go to their website, www.shopforcharityday.com, and designate Forgotten Animals (that’s all you need to type in) as your charity of choice, there is no additional charge to you when you do your regular Internet shopping, and a portion of your purchase will be donated to FALA. Please go to our website for information on how to donate your car or boat to FALA.

FALA has signed up with the Partner Program at www.1800petmeds.com. For every new customer who uses our referral code, FALA, when they sign up, we will get 10% of everything they order, forever.

WITH OUR THANKS FOR YOUR CONTINUING COMMITMENT TO THE ANIMALS, AND WITH EVERY BEST WISH FOR YOU AND YOURS!
